Queen Idia (also called Iyoba Idia) was a powerful queen mother of the Kingdom of Benin in the 16th century. She was the mother of Oba Esigie, one of Benin’s most important kings.
Political strategist & protector:
Idia is credited with helping Esigie secure the throne during a major succession conflict. She advised him and is said to have used both strategy and spiritual influence to strengthen his rule.
War influence:
During conflicts (including wars with the Igala people), she played a key role in planning and is believed to have contributed to decisive victories.
Founder of the Queen Mother title:
Because of her influence, Esigie created the title Iyoba (Queen Mother)—giving her official power, status, and her own court.
